Die hektische Metropole London ist der Schauplatz, vor dem sich dieses außergewöhnliche Drama über Liebe, Beziehungen, Illusionen und Fehlschläge entfaltet: Nachrufverfasser Dan will einen Roman schreiben, Stripperin Alice sucht nach Liebe, Dermatologe Larry nach Sex - und die Fotografin Anna wünscht sich eine Familie und beruflichen Erfolg, vor allem aber Zufriedenheit mit ihrem Leben.
Closer, das in Ausschnitten viereinhalb Jahre aus dem Leben seiner Protagonisten zeigt, lässt uns Zeugen werden, wie sie alle ihr Ziel erreichen - nur um es durch Unehrlichkeiten, emotionale Unzulänglichkeit und Unentschlossenheit wieder zu verlieren. Intensiv, beinahe schmerzlich ehrlich und vor allem zutiefst interessiert an Gefühlen, die wir alle kennen und teilen, schafft es das Stück, seine Charaktere als genau das zu zeigen, was sie sind: ganz gewöhnliche Menschen. Marbers Stück zeigt ungeschönt die Sehnsüchte und Enttäuschungen in der ewigen Suche nach der idealen Beziehung.
In seiner ursprünglichen Bühnenfassung hält Closer einige Überraschungen bereit für diejenigen Zuschauer, die bereits die Verfilmung kennen - unter anderem eine zusätzliche Szene und ein alternatives Ende. 2004 adaptierte Hollywood-Regisseur Mike Nichols das Stück für die Leinwand und besetzte so hochkarätige Stars wie Jude Law, Natalie Portman, Clive Owen und Julia Roberts. maniACTs-Regisseurin Christina Ernst wagt nun eine Inszenierung ohne den Glamour einer internationalen Starbesetzung - und so gelingt es ihr, das Stück so umzusetzen wie ursprünglich gedacht: als ein Bild von ganz alltäglichen und deshalb nicht minder tragischen Auseinandersetzungen und Gefühlen.

The bustling metropolis of London is the setting for this outstanding drama about love, relationships, illusions and failures: obituarist Dan wants to write a novel, stripper Alice is looking for love, dermatologist Larry for sex - and photographer Anna wants a family and a successful career, but most of all some contentment with the life she's got.
Closer, spanning a period of over four years of their lives, sees them all reach their goal - and lose it again as they allow themselves to be cheated by their partner, their emotional emptiness or indecisiveness. Intense, almost painfully honest and most of all concerned with an authenticity of human emotions and shortcomings, the play succeeds in showing its characters as just what they are: human beings. Marber's play shows human desires and human failures in the eternal chase for the ideal relationship and companionship without glossing over the harsher and more unpleasant aspects.
In its original stage version, Closer holds some surprises for those who have seen the recent film adaptation, as it features an additional scene and a different ending. It was adapted for the screen in 2004 by Hollywood director Mike Nichols, starring Natalie Portman, Jude Law, Clive Owen, and Julia Roberts. maniACTs director Christina Ernst now tackles Closer without the glamour of an international all-star cast, and thus succeeds in presenting the play as it is meant to be - a depiction of everyday but no less tragic struggles and feelings.
