| Night after night Tom Wingfield escapes the cramped
melancholy of the appartment in which he lives with Amanda, his mother,
and his sister Laura. A warehouse worker by profession and a poet by
vocation, he seeks to be distracted and inspired in the adventurous
dreamworld of the movies - much to his mother's displeasure. She wants
to see him focus on a career in order to gain money and status for the
family, which she knew in her childhood, growing up as daughter to a
Southern dynasty.
Laura, Tom's handicapped sister, is helplessly and neurotically suspended between the two of them. Escaping the demands of the outside world, she retreats to the nostalgia of her collection of glass animals and the old phonograph records, the only thing remaining of her father who has left the family long ago. Tension rises as Amanda urges Tom to bring home a co-worker as a potential suitor to Laura. When Jim, the charming "gentleman caller", appears for dinner, he actually manages to win her confidence. It seems that a dream is about to come true... |
